Wednesday, October 15, 6:30 PM Seattle Freelancers guest speaker. Event takes place at The U W Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 41st St. Seattle, 98105. The topic will be: Inciting Incident, Protagonists, Antagonists and the Desire Quest. Stories open with a disturbance. That disturbance has to be an event that upsets the balance of forces in a character’s familiar world. That character, the story’s protagonist, must react to that disturbance by embarking on a quest the goal of which is to restore balance. On that quest, the protagonist, filled with a desire to reach the goal, encounters resistance from external forces. Those forces include the antagonist. Each action that follows is causally connected to the protagonist’s desire to achieve the goal and restore balance. This workshop will define what an inciting incident is and how it can be used to spark a desire quest that will excite the reader enough to keep the reader turning pages and wondering what ‘s next.
