Looking for a one-off writers’ workshop? I will be teaching The Art of Story Structure for the EPIC Group Writers Saturday, Oct 29, 2016 from 9:30 AM to Noon in Edmonds, Washington. The workshop (open to 20 max) will be held in the real estate office of Coldwell Banker Baine at 108 5th Ave. S., Edmonds, 98020. To sign up please go to http://www.epicgroupwriters.com. (See details below.)
Suitable for fiction, narrative nonfiction, and memoir, this workshop will explore how to use story structure to dramatize events. All stories are in one way shape or form a quest. We will look at how to take a story line from the disturbing event to the goal. In the second half of class we will look at a Jon Franklin’s five-focus story structure as a way to plan and organize dramatic material.
If that Saturday doesn’t work for you, Elena Hartwell is teaching The Craft of Research at the same venue, Saturday Oct. 22, same time slot. (See below.)
Here’s your chance to learn about story and the business of writing without having to sign up for a full-on conference. Hope to see you there.

The Art of Story Structure

Scott Driscoll is an award-winning instructor and writer. He will lead participants in an exploration of how story structure is a “Desire Quest” that upsets the balance of a character’s world and leads to life changing events. Using Writing For Story by Jon Franklin, Driscoll will show workshop participants how to organize fiction or narrative nonfiction pieces into “five structural focuses.” You will learn how each of these “five structural focuses” contributes to your over-arching story.
